It is a beautiful sunny morning. A good opportunity to take away a coffee and go for a walk. I step outside, the sun is warm, I enjoy it and try to ignore the drunken and smelly people I pass by on my way to the Old Town. Sky blue, air warm, coffee tasty, a smile on my face, everything easy. I decide to walk up to Toompea, the only hill in Tallinn, to have a view over the city. The blurred idea in mind to sit on some part of the city wall, legs dangling, watch busy life down in the streets go by, while dreaming and getting the day started.
This might have warned me. But everything still seems like an ordinary monday morning. Not too many people around, most of them are already working and anyway, quite peaceful. I’m heading for the Parliament thinking about the small park besides it. There were not many people around, nice old trees, view when I was there the last time.

Even the huge line of coaches seems peaceful. No one around. At first. The doors of one of them open, the first tourists are dropping out. You easily recognize them by their short trousers, sandals and foto or videocamera. The guides take position in front of the bus, raising signs with different numbers. The tourists seem to know which guide they belong to and form a group around their guide. The first pictures are taken.
I am still surprised of the events, decide to ignore the tourists and make my way. It’s just half past 9 am. These must be the first tourists of the day. Early birds.
How could I be so wrong?
Some steps further, around the corner, the park’s gate is near. But in front of it, the space between Parliament and Alexander Nevskij Cathedral: guides telling the stories of the two buildings in every possible language to tourist groups of almost every imaginable origin. A lot of them are already waiting to go into the Cathedral, in front of which poor old ladies are already waiting for them to come out again and to put some coins in their plastic bowls.
I take a seat on a park bench. Anyway. The big difference between us is: they have to go again. I will stay.
